What medications are currently being most prescribed for patients with BPD? What medications are to be avoided?

People with borderline PD may benefit from antidepressant medication, to help lift
their mood. Mood stabilisers, such as lithium or sodium valproate may be helpful, to help smooth out the mood swings and 'mood crashes' which can be part of the
condition. In addition, neuroleptic medication, such as chlorpromazine, olanzapine
or risperidone my be helpful in reducing anxiety and dampening down impulsivity.
Certain medications, such as diazepam or lorazepam, are generally best avoided, as they can be habit-forming. Although these drugs are very useful for short-term
treatment, their use should be closely supervised by the prescribing doctor, and
they are not suitable for everyone.
