Other Mental Health Issues

There are four kinds of abuse, psychical, emotional, sexual and neglect. Abuse happens usually within family circumstances or close relationships. People who have survived abuse often have a range of problems like low self-esteem, difficulty trusting others and depression. We have an abuse survivor’s forum on our website where people can come and share their stories, their pain and get support and advice on how to deal with the aftermath of their abuse.

A depression is a prolonged state of feeling depressed, sad, down, lasting at least two weeks. There are several symptoms associated with depression, a few are, loss of interest in activity’s that the person used to enjoy, loss of appetite, problems with sleep, feelings of being unworthy of not being a good person, feelings of guilt. Depression usually is cured best by a combination of anti-depressants and talk therapy.

Dissociation is a state in which people feel disconnected from their surroundings, other people and sometimes themselves. People can feel like they are in a dream state or that things don’t feel real. Some people experience thoughts that seem to come out of nowhere. And in this state some people dissociate so much that they are unaware of their behaviour at the time.

There are four types of eating disorders. Anorexia Nervosa, bulimia, binge eating disorder and eating disorders otherwise not specified. We have a forum for people with eating disorders where people can come and talk to people who understand and are in the same position; they can also get advice and help there from staff members and peers.

OCD is short for obsessive-compulsive disorder. OCD is a disorder characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts called obsessions and repetitive behaviours called compulsions. Examples of unwanted thoughts are the fear you will do harm to someone, thoughts of a non acceptable sexual nature and thoughts about your religion that you find unacceptable. Examples of compulsions are the need to clean your house endlessly and a fear of bacteria or for instance always worrying you left the gas on or the stove etc and checking repeatedly. Or feeling you have to do certain things, actions over and over again. These behaviours relieve anxiety but only shortly and then it starts all over again.

Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disorder. Some symptoms are, hearing voices, hallucinations and paranoia.
These symptoms can make people with schizophrenia fearful and withdrawn and they often have trouble maintaining relationships with close ones. There is a lot of hope though for people with schizophrenia, treatments of which most important are meds can alleviate many of the symptoms. General public often think people with this disease are dangerous that is however rarely the case.

Self harm is when people deliberately hurt or injure themselves, this can take a number of forms. Most common is cutting oneself but self harm is also hitting yourself, scratching till you bleed, overdosing without suicide intent, burning oneself etc There are different motivations for people to do this. For example it is often a coping mechanism for people, when they feel psychical pain they can forget about the emotional pain they are in, or people who dissociate use it to feel alive again. It is very hard to get self harm under control but it can certainly be done, the main objective in overcoming self harm is to find other ways of coping then to hurt yourself. We have a forum for people who self harm you can talk there about your experiences with self harm, you can talk to peers and staff and get useful tips on how to overcome it, support and help.
